Administrative Distance counts the reliability of a routing protocol. Administrative Distance (AD) is a numeric value which can range from 0 to 255. The router determines which source is the most trustworthy (i.e., reliable) according to the administrative distance. The lower the administrative distance, the more trustworthy the routing source. Any routes that are assigned an administrative distance value of 255 are considered untrusted and will not be placed into the routing table. The administrative distance is a locally significant value that affects only the local router. This value is not propagated throughout the routing domain.

The administrative distance is a locally significant value that affects only the local router. This value is not propagated throughout the routing domain. The textbook definition of “administrative distance” is simple enough: “the measurement of a protocol’s believability”. It’s not enough to know the definition, however you’ve got to know when AD comes into the picture and when it does not. The metric option can be any number between 1 and 255 and that number will become the administrative distance of the static route being added. For example, the following command will add a static route with an AD of 200: Router1 (config)#ip route 192.168.5.0 255.255.255.0 10.1.1.2 200 When selecting identical prefixes from multiple routing protocols, the prefix with the lowest administrative distance is used and appears in the routing table. When calculating BGP best paths, BGP takes IGP metric from the IP routing table and it just so happens that a good EIGRP metric is higher than a not-so-good OSPF metric, and so a BGP next hop learned by OSPF is preferred over a BGP next hop learned by EIGRP.
